Dr. Lisa Bergson joined the public relations department at URI in September 2016 as a Lecturer. Prior to joining the PR faculty at URI, she taught a variety of introductory and upper-level courses in strategic communication, public speaking, and public relations. She has experience teaching traditional face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses. Bergson believes that an education is the key to unlocking an individual’s potential.

Prior to teaching in the academe, Bergson worked in nonprofit organizations for 23 years and, as such, she wore many hats simultaneously. She was responsible for event management – anywhere from small events with 6 people to major festivals that drew 50,000+ of people over a weekend. In addition, she was responsible for all PR, marketing, advertising, development, fundraising, budgets, grant writing and management, staff and volunteer management, and so much more. She brings a wealth of practical experience to the classroom. From time to time, she shares PR activities, writing, and plans that went well and those that did not.

Bergson has a Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership Studies from Northeastern University, a program that emphasized strategic and organizational communication as well as leadership.

As a scholar-practitioner, Bergson’s research focuses on the career adaptability of second-career contingent faculty, a growing segment of the instructional majority (part-time faculty) teaching college students today. She is also interested in crisis communication and the scholarship of teaching and learning in public relations.
