Kristen Cyr

Biography

Kristen Cyr works as a public relations officer in the Department of Marketing and Communications at the Community College of Rhode Island, where she coordinates media, manages content for the college’s website, and helps develop and implement marketing campaigns. She transitioned to this role in 2007 after a 13-year career in newspapers, primarily as the founding editor of the North East Independent, an award-winning weekly newspaper. She joined URI’s journalism department as an adjunct instructor in 2004.

A graduate of the University of Rhode Island’s journalism department, she worked as an editor at The Good 5 Cent Cigar. After graduation, she held reporting and editing positions at a daily and two weekly newspaper companies in Rhode Island before she became editor of the Independent in 1999. She was president of the Rhode Island Press Association and now is active in the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations, serving as the District 1 Executive Council member representing Rhode Island.
