Biography

Bob Herzog joined the URI faculty in the spring of 2019 following a 46-year career as a sports journalist. The Syracuse University graduate spent 42 years as an editor and writer in the sports department of Newsday, one of the largest daily newspapers in the country.

At Newsday, Herzog edited six special sections that won Associated Press Sports Editor awards. He served as Olympics Editor from 1984 until 1996 and also wrote a 22-part series on the history of the Summer Games leading up to the Games in Atlanta, which marked the 100th anniversary of the first summer Olympics.

In 1998, Herzog became a senior sports writer at Newsday, covering St. John’s and Big East men’s basketball as well as the Yankees, Mets, Giants and Jets until 2007. He covered three NCAA men’s basketball Final Fours, five World Series, two Super Bowls and three MLB All-Star Games. He has a lifetime membership in the Baseball Writers Association of America and currently is a Hall of Fame voter.

From 2008 until his retirement in July of 2018, Herzog primarily covered high school and college sports, including 10 NCAA men’s lacrosse Final Fours, 10 state championships in boys basketball and boys lacrosse and 10 Long Island football championships.

In 2015, he won a first-place award in Feature Writing from the New York Press Club for a story on the death of a high school football player. Later that year, Herzog was inducted into the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame.

From 2011-17, Herzog was an adjunct professor in Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism, teaching Sports Reporting.

He lives in Wakefield with his wife and college sweetheart, Bonnie. His two children and three grandchildren live in Rhode Island, which is why he retired there!
