SPEAKING

  • Students can effectively use communication strategies, i.e., identify a subject, organize ideas, hypothesize, and formulate a thesis.
  • Students can show an ability to argue a point of view, explain it in detail and support it with evidence.
  • Students are able to collaborate and effectively participate in group discussions.

READING

  • Students are able to read and demonstrate good comprehension of written discourse in areas of the students special interest, e.g., scholarly articles, critical essays, technical documents.
  • Students are able to understand parts of texts which are conceptually abstract and linguistically complex and/or texts which treat unfamiliar topics.
  • Students are able to identify and analyze and evaluate the aesthetic qualities of cinema.
  • Students are able to recognize the role of cultural knowledge in comprehension of film texts.

WRITING

  • Students can write about a variety of topics with significant precision and in detail.
  • Students are able to state their opinions and provide support for their points of view in written discourse.
  • Students are able to do basic analysis and research on a filmic, literary or cultural topic and present their findings in a research paper.

FILM CULTURE

  • Students can demonstrate an overall knowledge of film culture in its diversity, i.e., the historical and ideological forces surrounding and supporting (e.g., social, artistic, industrial, and industrial factors and their interrelationships).
  • Students are able to recognize the varieties and potentialities of different forms of film media, e.g., narrative, documentary, experimental, commercial, etc.
  • Students are able to demonstrate familiarity with information resources and film media technologies, including traditional film/video processes, computer resources, and emerging media.

CRITICAL THINKING

  • Students will demonstrate the ability to clarify or critique film texts, generalize without oversimplifying, distinguish fact from opinion, compare and contrast ideas, clarify issues, make interdisciplinary connections, compare perspectives, exercise fair-mindedness, and think independently.
