URI’s GSLIS is excited to announce that Alumnae Stefanie Metko ’13 and Catherine Damiani ’15 have been selected as “ALA Emerging Leaders” for 2016! This competitive and exclusive program of only 50 leaders nationwide is designed “to enable library staff and information workers to participate in project planning work groups, network with peers, gain an inside look into ALA structure and have an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity early in their careers” (ALA, 2015).

As URI students, both of these incredible librarians were actively engaged in the Rhode Island community, serving as Student ALA Presidents from 2012-2013 and 2014-2015 respectively. Stefanie is currently Assistant Professor and Online Learning and Education Librarian at Virginia Tech, as well as Adjunct Faculty at URI’s GSLIS. She is sponsored by the Virginia Library Association (VLA). Catherine is currently a Digital Services Librarian at East Providence Public Library. She is sponsored by the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA).

When asked what prompted her to apply, Catherine said “when I attended ALA Annual in San Francisco this summer I was able to make a lot of great connections with current and past Emerging Leaders. This helped me see just how important the Emerging Leaders program is in building leadership and professional development skills in new library professionals”.

“I’m most looking forward to working with librarians around the country,” says Damiani.  Around the networking possibilities the Emerging Leaders Program affords,  Damiani states, “I think it will be really interesting to develop professional relationship with others while working on a project together from January to June…the Emerging Leaders program will be a great opportunity to work with new professionals from all backgrounds and types of libraries too.”

To see our alumnae in action, they will be attending the 2016 ALA Mid-Winter in Boston and the Annual Conference in Orlando as part of the Emerging Leaders Program!

Congratulations to our URI GSLIS Alumnae on their amazing work!
