The School Library Media program is a track within the 36-credit hour MLIS program, enabling students to earn the MLIS degree while qualifying for School Library Media Certification in Rhode Island and other states in the Interstate Certificate Compact (including Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.) This program has earned the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) with national recognition by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and approval by the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE).
GSLIS offers a Teacher Certification Program (TCP) with a specialization in library media for graduates of an MLIS program, who would like to complete the additional requirements of the SLM degree for certification.Students must follow the same guidelines and application procedures as for the MLIS program above for provisional admittance to the TCP in school library media.
Students admitted into the TCP program are governed by the same academic standards as other GSLIS matriculated graduate students. Upon acceptance, the candidate must complete an official Program of Study in consultation with the coordinator of the School Library Media Program. The coordinator will analyze the student’s transcripts to determine which courses can be accepted and which courses are needed to complete the student’s credentials for the certification program. The number of additional courses needed to complete the TCP program will vary depending upon transcript analysis. However, to meet the standards of our Rhode Island State Approved Program in Library Media (K-12) and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), a student must have the URI courses listed for the School Library Media Program.

PROGRAM OF STUDY FORMS
Program of Study forms are due to the Student Affairs Office, by e-mail, by the end of your first semester in the program. This form should be completed and reviewed by your faculty advisor prior to submission. Every time a change is made to your Program of Study, you must review the change with your faculty advisor, fill out a new form, and submit to the Student Affairs Office as soon as possible. Important: The Graduate School does not accept initial Program of Study forms in a student’s final semester of graduate study.
The Nominate to Graduate Form should be submitted to the Student Services Office, by email, for processing.
Very Important! Your final updated Program of Study form must have been submitted to the Student Services Office prior to your submission of the Nomination for Graduation form. These forms cannot be turned in together on the deadline. The Graduate School cannot guarantee that you will graduate on time if you submit your Nomination for Graduation form late and without having previously submitted your final updated Program of Study.
