Celebrate, critique, and create the craft of comedy at “Open Mic, Open Minds: An Exploration of Social Issues in Standup,” held on Saturday, March 22, 2014, in Kingston, Rhode Island.

The symposium is FREE for all URI students.

9:15-10:15 Keynote Address

Dr. Jerry Zolten of Penn State Altoona delivers a multimedia presentation on the historical roots of stand-up comedy

10:15-12:15 Workshops

Session 1 (10:15-11:05)
  • The Road to High Street: Humor in Sight, Sound and Story
  • Utilizing Stage Time and Getting Started
  • The Comedic Portrayal of Transgender People
  • Media Lunacy for Media Literacy: Introducing the ML4ML blog showcasing silly media for savvy media use
Session 2 (11:15-12:05)
  • Canadian Comedy – Pod People from the North
  • Starting the Discussion: Addressing Minority Stereotypes Through Humor
  • A Live Chat with a Local Comedian (and URI Alum) Touring in California
  • A Humorous Retrospective of the Gay Marriage Battle in Rhode Island

12:15-1 Lunch

1:05-2:10 Film Screening and Discussion

A collection of stand-up comedy excerpts that address race, gender, class, religion, and politics, followed by a group discussion

2:15-2:50 Comics on Political Topics

Erin Judge and Myq Kaplan deliver material from their acts and then describe how they developed it, what they hope to accomplish with it, and how it works around the country, followed by Q+A

3-4 Writers’ Workshop

In different rooms, participants work in groups to write a comedy sketch/scene/stand-up routine (Introduction by facilitator, creativity exercises, brainstorming, writing, rehearsing)

4-4:15 Break

4:15-5 Presentation/Sharing & Reflection

Groups share their work and reflect on the day in roundtable groups, slideshow of pictures from the day, raffle ticket winners are revealed

5-8 Break for dinner

Participants break for dinner independently

8:00 Comedy Show
