Lunch-time seminar for the public on museum education and outreach initiatives, including youth leadership and digital media efforts.

In 2009, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum opened a new special exhibition, State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda with the goals of provoking new examination of propaganda, increasing the public’s ability to critically analyze media messages, and promoting dialogue about how and when societies should address the challenge of hate speech. The exhibition offered an opportunity to cultivate new audiences and experiment with new educational strategies. This session will explore the Museum’s efforts to engage youth audiences in the exhibition using new technologies. It will also highlight a new leadership summit for college students to delve deeply into the challenges of propaganda, hate speech, and civic engagement. We will touch on lessons learned, implications for museum education, and best practices for outreach to new audiences.
