Opting in: The Success of Learner Autonomy in Voluntary Online Forums

Join PhD candidate J.C. Lee, as she hosts a lunchtime discussion on Friday, November 22nd.  Don’t forget to bring your lunch! This will be an informal presentation consisting of two parts: 30 minutes for the talk and 30 minutes for discussion.

ABSTRACT: Framed within a larger quest to understand how people use public writing to generate and share knowledge through open, online forum communities, this presentation focuses on the preliminary step of information acquisition. It explores the extent to which many amphibian enthusiasts on forums learn autonomously, developing their understanding of both specialized content and specialized, nonacademic discourse.
