Artist Talk with Tony Balko – ‘Keep on Snoezelen‘
Keep on Snoezelen is a two-part reference, with a three-part meaning! First, it points to Creedence Clearwater Revival’s seminal chug-fest, Keep on Chooglin’. Second, to the controlled multisensory environment therapy known as ‘Snoezelen.’ And third, to a desperate need for cultural agency, satisfied by exercising a wanton disregard for copyright. As representatives of larger themes, these things figure heavily into Balko’s practice spanning moving images, installation and performance. Please join Tony as he discusses these ideas across the body of his recent work.
Tony Balko is an artist and educator from Smithton, Pennsylvania, USA. Primarily working in the moving image, he elicits ecstatic vibes via flickering color fields, dork fetishism aesthetics, and classic rock anthems. His work has shown most notably in abandoned storefronts, derelict warehouses and bedridden laptops across the galaxy.
Tony is currently the director of the ‘HUB’ at the University of Rhode Island’s Harrington School of Communication and Media. You can see his work on the world wide web at www.tonybalko.com.
