The Mattoon-Kline Scholarship was established by Nancy Mattoon Kline, who earned her Master’s in Library Science from the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Library Studies in 1973. The purpose of the annual award is to support the diversification of the library profession by supporting full-time or part-time graduate students of color in the GSLIS program. The awards should be based on need rather than merit. The determination of the recipient(s) and the amount awarded will be made by the Director of the GSLIS in conjunction with the Financial Aid in Enrollment Services. To be eligible, the applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. or Canada. Also, applicants must be one of the following: American Indian/Alaskan Native; Asian; Black/African American; Latino/Hispanic; or Native Hawaiian/other Pacific Islander.
To apply for the Mattoon-Kline Scholarship, a matriculated GSLIS student must be in good academic standing and should submit an application packet to the Admissions and Awards Committee by February 15. The packet should contain the following:
- a one page cover letter, nominating yourself for the award and highlighting your special qualifications (see above);
- a completed application form;
- your resume and program of study; and
- a statement of financial need.
Applications will be evaluated for evidence of citizenship, residency, contribution to professional diversity, and financial need. Announcement of the award will be made at the GSLIS Annual Gathering.
